I have had the pleasure of knowing Lev for over 12 years.  While Lev was the lead rabbi at Chabad of Raleigh, NC, I served as the board president.  Within that capacity, I had an opportunity to work closely with Lev.  Being the lead Rabbi anywhere is a challenging job but to be the lead rabbi at a Chabad in Raleigh, NC is not for the faint of heart.  I personally witnessed how Lev rises to challenges with both grit and perseverance.

For all the years you were my beloved Rabbi at Sharaii Israel in Raleigh where I  witnessed and  learned so many times your virtue and sensitivity to those about you.  From great nachas and happiness that Raleigh’s citizens shared with you to the deepest tragedy and sorrow. I personally then and now suffer loss in our separation but what stands out clearly of your nature is your unbelievable ability to teach on any level, to any student or member.  You may recall that some years ago when you asked me to babysit your toddler in your home, I met a gentleman doing household chores.  This man was from Leningrad and and was the director of a medical college. When I suggested that perhaps he should return to the medical field he adamantly refused stating the respect and understanding he had from you was more important for his peace of mind than medicine. I feel  the same. When weeping I sat before you many times about the pain of my son’s behavior you, did not molly coddle me but gave me serious advice and strength I needed to cope with this awful pain. When another child of mine fell deeply ill you were there to assauge a different  pain. 

 

With everything written in the paragraph above you most stand out as the finest teacher and coach I’ve ever had.  Students did not run away from you, they couldn’t bear to leave either from  your classes, lectures, discussions and just plain old social stuff.

 

Now that I am working on a PhD you would have been a great asset under my wings.
